Hi Robert
Just read over the last few days the book Screwtape letters that you recommended about a year ago. I never got past the first page until now. Turns out this was a much better time to read this intriguing book. I liked the fact that I recognised by experience many of the problematic concepts and dilemmas described by Screwtape. If I had read this earlier it may have lead me to avoid certain situations, which although at the time seemed adverse or confusing, were in fact building me up and strengthening me.
I got a very strong lesson from a particular activity last Sunday 27th. A lady passed out, well a lady did actually pass out but this particular lady was passing out?? ok giving out, small parcels to young children. Some had sweets but some had sprouts, there was a whole disappointment but what's actually best for you thing going on there. Anyway I was glad I didn't see the sprout coming and try to avoid it and grab the sweet, I would have missed out on something good.
I wondered if this book started you of on the whole logic V's Hueristics problem solving thing. I like the way this author (CS Lewis) opens one's eyes to inconsistencies and invalidities of apparently logical argument that we apply to everyday situations.
I was quite pleased but hopefully not in a smug way to note that, quite without trying on my part I had let go of some of these absurdities (well I was a little smug but I talked with Him about that straight away, he said "don't do it again and gave me some tools to help, He's good like that eh?)
There's one small part that I haven't really got a handle on yet - Page 127 and 128 last and first paragraphs respectively - He likes and promotes social justice but don't use him to obtain this for yourself or your society. There's a fine line don't you think? Wouldn't it at least be a good start? couldn't we progress from there more easily than if we started from engineered injustice?
Anyway thanks for planting that seed it bore good fruit eventually, I'm looking forward to reading some of his others the similar subject.
You may have noticed I did avoid being to overt, I was just trying avoid scaring the children. I suppose they'll have to know sooner or later. It's not Bad News you know Kids its just a sprout in lambs clothing.
All the best Dave Smith
