Hi Another query re paeds, what age would not treat with orthotics? Is 3 yrs too young? If previously prescribed by different pod and you don't believe they are necessary how do you approach this? I am being cheeky in asking the above but any advice would be helpful. Thanks Podmum

No, 3 is definitly not too young IMO. All depends on what the problem is, what you're trying to achieve and how.
We use surgical boots (usually with insoles) from anything over about 18 months.
The question is, do YOU think they are necessary?
Generally speaking i will only intervene under school age if the patient is in pain or having their function limited (ie falling over more than is acceptable). I guess this is not the case. So far as protecting structure and optimising function is concerned i would question the value of orthotics based on how long most 3 year olds wear shoes!
As to how i would broach it, is would depend on the parents. Much harder to convince someone that their child his healthy than that they are not!
If the parents were that dead set and the kid really is ok i might be tempted to use a "different type" of insole for 6/12 - 12/12 then when they come in for review step back in satisfied smugness and report huge progress and improvement and that they can try 6 months without insoles to see if all is now well. Review again in 6/12 and if all is well then discharge them
Whats wrong with the kid? What are the parents like?
