Like Tim i have not heard of them before but found this
The Strassburg Sock is a comfortable night splint for treating plantar fasciitis, heel pain, heel spurs and tendonitis. The Strassburg Sock is a tubular knit sock with adjustable straps used at night to stretch the plantar fascia and the calf. It is lightweight, breathable and washable which makes it the most comfortable night splint. In a study in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery in 2002, patients with plantar fasciitis recovered 60% faster than those not using the Strasburg Sock
The Strassburg Sock consists of a tubular knit material that fits "over the calf" with 2 attached adjustable straps to maintain the foot in a neutral to slightly stretched position. When worn at night the device will apply a force which results in the reduction and/or elimination of the pain felt during those first steps in the morning.
How does The Strassburg Sock work?
Strassburg sock is an easy to use, inexpensive device, designed to keep tension on the plantar fascia so it heals in a stretched position at night. In this way many users find a reduction of their morning pain, some have noticed a reduced recovery time and reduced the need for medications. When The Strassburg Sock is worn as prescribed, it does not allow the plantar fascia to contract while sleeping. The device holds the ankle and forefoot joints in a position of slight dorsiflexion which prevents the plantar fascia from contracting during the night.
When sleeping, the foot is in a relaxed, plantarflexed position. Initially, the achilles tendon, calf and the plantar fascia are in a relaxed position as well.
But, during the night as the foot remains in a plantarflexed position, both the calf and the plantar fascia contract and tighten.
In the morning, the plantar fascia is in this tightened, shortened position. When full body weight is placed on the foot, the fascia becomes overstressed and tears.
The Strassburg Sock holds the ankle up and pulls the toes back, stretching both the calf and the plantar fascia during the night. This prevents them from contracting and tightening, helping to eliminate pain at the first step in the morning and facilitate healing.
What are the advantages of the "Strassburg Sock" night splint?
It is very easy to use
Strassburg sock does not lock the ankle joint into any one position thus allowing some movement between the various joints preventing possible joint compression pain.
It can be safely worn for several hours without adverse effect when applied properly.
Strassburg sock night splint can be worn to bed, provides no significant restrictions and will not interrupt normal sleep if worn as directed.
It is an effective device providing low cost relief of heel pain symptoms.
It can reduce/eliminate the pain experienced with the first morning steps.
Strassburg sock can supplement and not interfere with the various traditional doctor's treatment.
How do I figure out what size Strassburg I need?
Although most individuals do well with the Regular size, the best way to figure out which size you need is to take a flexible tape measure and wrap it around the widest part of your calf. If the measurement is under 16 inches, choose the Regular size, if the measurement is 16 inches or over, choose the Large size.
