Dear David H
Just a heads up
There is an article in this weeks New Scientist that should interest you. It explores a 'new' theory about bipedalism being an evolution of hand assisted bipedal gait for walking in trees as Orang Utangs do.
Cheers Dave

Hi Dave
Have heard of this before, possibly from new scientist (?), about a year ago. May well go and buy one as a treat. Thanks Ian

Just read this, it's an interesting paper from the University of Birmingham. In this part of the world* we have specific expertise due to the fact that a fair proportion of the population still knuckle walk!
All the best
Bill
PS * that actually refers to citizens of the Black Country, but you southerners wouldn't know the difference. I'll explain at the next meet.

Cheers Bill, You're a gent! This is a Google ad from the headline ads above. I wasn't sure whether you and Robert would be swayed by their no-nonsense, ethical scientific approach To advertising - or not. "Eating edible clay every day for 2 months did the trick..Terramin clay www.I-AmPerfectlyHealthy.com"Very good for bunions I believe . ;D

Finally got around to reading this - thanks for the hard copy Bill. Interesting - it makes sense, except that orang-utangs are pretty well developed for what they do now, so their "hand-assisted bi-pedalism may simply be an evolutionary development, and may not have existed 13 million years ago. Thats whats so fascinating/frustrating about paleoanthropology - it depends upon what was last dug up. And of course we'll never be certain about things, because whose to say there isn't some more underground evidence waiting to be discovered . Meantime, in another part of the same magazine there is a mention of the "Hobbits" discovery in Indonesia which the popular Press wet themsleves over several years ago. It seems they were dwarf homo sapiens (affected by iodine deficiency). This information somewhat removes the excitement and glamour from the original discovery - but puts Lord of the Rings firmly back into the enjoyable Fantasy box - where it belongs. Ho-hum

Just like 'alternative medicine' then?
