Del thinks i'm cynical. Thats praise indeed! I must be learning it from a master. I suggest that "we are bothering" because what we do, if we do it right, works! Yes labs alter casts. Does'nt mean they're not still "custom". And if you consider the fact that there is a limited range of foot shapes in the world logic suggests that there is probably a pre fab somewhere which is effectively the same shape as the foot! If the lab you use produces insoles that work from the data / casts you send them its a good process and a custom device whether they use cad cam, plaster alteration, dowsing, ESP or looking at it, grunting, and chisling something from a block of eva with a chainsaw. Oh Del, why must you always seek the pseudoscientific answers? is there no place for empiricism in your practice? ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png) ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Regards Robert

Like i said, ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ;D PWND Yeah, possibly. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Mind you i've been reassessing of late. Perhaps i've been a bit harsh on marigold in the past. Perhaps biomechanincs IS really simple. And working for the NHS is rewarding and fun. And there must be something to proprioceptive insoles or else where would those testimonials come from? I feel a bit strange at the moment. Regards Really REALLY sleep deprived Pod.

Trying to drag myself back to the commonplace and ordinary for a moment. Try this for an analogy.
If you go to get measured for a suit you know you will get a beautifully taylored suit which fits perfectly. Now the taylor, a master craftsman, think a skinny, fussy man in his late 60s who keeps his change in a shovel purse and counts it regardless of how long the queue is, might let out the chest so it hangs better over the hips, take it in around the thighs to accentuate your firm and toned buttocks that style of thing. He certainly won't just make it skin tight, thats a different type of outfit. But it is still very much, your bespoke suit.
If you buy one from M&S you will probably find one which fits but it might be a bit long in the sleeves, or tight across the shoulders.
Now if you are a normal sort of shape and trawled bluewater for hours you might even happen to find one which fits almost as well as a fitted one. Then again you might not. And a really, really good taylor might think, hmmm, this man, he be the shape of a primark suit and if he judges you right, that might just be indistinguishable from the real article to the untrained eye. There are rumours of some taylors who take measurement, stroke their chin, pop out to mos bros then sell it as a bespoke. But does that mean we should all go buy are suits at matalan?
I suggest not.
Regards Roebrt

(I think). Blue water = When the water aint got sewerage in it & reflects light from the sky (or is it tutha way round?). Matalan = Similar to Primarni: Easily located by aroma of Eau de council. Shopping = No idea, I refuse to be drawn in. Next question? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Hi Again Lawrence et al I have just had occasion to contact the head orthotist and Technical clinical advisor at Gaitscan in Canada ,and posed your question to him re injection /heat mouldable O's. He gave the explanation as follows : We used to buy in the thermoplastic in large sheets and cut heat mould from that but we now buy in "pellets" which are injection moulded into sized flat sheets. The manufacture of the orthotic is done using heat and a vacuum former over a positive cast. The additions are fitted by hand to the practitioners Rx. He also followed this up by stating if they could do the whole thing by injection moulding they probably would but it is not possible for them, but could not speak for any other lab. I hope that helps ?? Cheers Derek ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

derek
cheers for that mate, obviously gaitscan is predominantly pre-fab as most of their orders are through there magic mats.
I think the quote by Robert shows what can go on at some places. I wonder if this story is true and if one sends a cavoid foot to the famous aforementioned clinic only to recieve a non-fitting "prefab-looking" device, that this situation should be allowed to stand unchallenged?

Hi Lawrence I do know that may be the case as that clinic is only short distance from me and one of the other disciplines that are connected there send me the ones that they cant sort out ( but only after charging their fee of course ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ) Which incidentally makes it doubly hard for me as they have already paid a huge amount of money for failure and then I have to charge them as well. Many despite my advice, are unwilling /afraid to go back and get their money back BUT I have been led to believe "Trading standards" are looking at them based on the amount of complaints they get. We shall see Cheers D ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
